Make Your Copper Pots and Pans Shiny with These Easy Fixes

Electrostatic Painting Machinery

At Steeltech, our team is efficient at bringing new life back to aluminum, steel, copper, and brass surfaces, using electrostatic painting. With a specialized spray gun, an electrostatic charge is applied to the powder particles, which are then attracted to the grounded part. This is when the curing process begins. The result is a product that is better than a factory-baked-on finish.

In many ways, you can consider us experts in bringing new life to these materials of all forms – not just aluminum medical equipment or stainless-steel condo elevators. We also know a thing or two about making the copper on pots, pans, and other kitchenware look brand new.

Many people use copper for cooking because it’s highly durable and can last several years. It is also easy on the eyes. So, if you have a set of worn pots and pans that you don’t know what to do with, here are a few tips to reclaim their shine.

The Importance of Clean Copper

The first thing you want to do is ensure your copper is thoroughly cleaned with soap and water. From there, you can apply your polish, whether store-bought or DIY. When washing copper, you should always clean it gently with a smooth sponge and lots of sudsy soap.

Cleaning your copper is extremely important. In general, copper cookware is coated with metal to prevent your food from coming into contact with the actual copper. If it is not properly cleaned, it can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

To restore your pots, you don’t need exterior high-performance coating systems, like the equipment found at our shop. You may find that it is easier than you imagined.

Lemon and Salt Method

There are a few ways people clean their pots. Using lemon and salt is perhaps the most common. This will ensure your copper pots look polished and shiny.

  • Take one lemon and cut it in half.
  • Sprinkle salt over the lemon.
  • Use this on your copper pan as you would a sponge, targeting the entire surface of your used pots and pans.
  • Rinse with warm water and dry.

If there are tough spots that won’t go away using this method, step it up a notch, but continue to use the same two ingredients. Only this time, squeeze the lemon juice into a small bowl and add enough salt to create a thin paste. Rub this mixture over tough stains for a smooth and polished surface.

See how easy this is? You probably put off cleaning your copperware because you expected to buy extra cleaning equipment and put in a lot of elbow grease. While you can apply elbow grease to buff your copper pots, by using a sponge or rag, applying lemon and salt is a much easier method. Keep in mind, it won’t be effective if you have lacquered copperware, as lacquered pots and pans do not brown or change color with use.

Lemon Juice and Baking Soda Mix

Baking soda is a magical agent. Not only does it allow baked goods to rise to desirable heights, but it is also frequently used as a cleaning and deodorizing agent. When used to return shine to your copperware, simply add some type of acid, such as lemon juice or vinegar, with baking soda.

  • Stir until the ingredient or fully combined.
  • Apply the mixture to your pots and pans.
  • With a soft cloth, scrub in a circular motion.
  • Rinse with warm water and dry.

There are other ways you can return shine to your copper, but we find these methods to be the most effective:

  • Lemon and salt
  • Lemon (or vinegar) and baking soda
  • Buffing it with a soft cloth
